As part of the poesiefestival berlin poets from the Netherlands and Flanders are meeting with their German-speaking colleagues to translate each other. The VERSschmuggel translation workshop uses a special method – translating poetry with poetry. The poets work together in pairs and translate the poems of their respective partners into their own poetic language with the aid of gloss translations and assisted by literary translators.
In this way a direct exchange takes place, allowing stylistic contexts, cultural connotations and poetic traditions to be “smuggled” into the poets’ own languages. The results will be presented at a bilingual reading this evening and will be published in an anthology by Das Wunderhorn Press in time for the 2016 Frankfurt Book Fair, to which the Netherlands and Flanders are invited as guest countries.
